Holy Smokes! Who’s Ready to Smoke Some Tasty BBQ?
It’s that time of year again! The Men’s Ministry is excited to host our 5th annual Holy Smokes BBQ — an all-day smoked meat contest with prizes awarded for the tastiest pork, ribs, burnt ends, and more!
This year, we’re turning up the heat by combining this event with our Volunteer Celebration Dinner — a special evening to honor and thank all those who serve faithfully at Ascend.
Here’s how the day will unfold:
- Up to 20 contestants will begin firing up their smokers outside the church starting at 6:00 a.m.
- Participants may compete in up to three of four categories: pork shoulder, pork ribs, beef burnt ends, and Smoker’s Choice.
- Want to join in but can’t smoke onsite? You’re welcome to bring meat smoked from home, but to be eligible for prizes, your meat must be smoked live at Ascend.
- Each contestant will receive $50 toward the purchase of meat.
- Need help getting your smoker to church? Contact Tim Lung at 913-526-9537, and we’ll make it happen.
Prizes will be awarded for each category winner, plus one for Grand Champion.
We’ll cap off the day with our Volunteer Celebration Dinner from 6:00–8:00 p.m. This is our chance to say THANK YOU to all who serve — and it will be fueled by the incredible BBQ smoked throughout the day.
NOTE: This is not a potluck. Dinner will be provided for all the volunteers.
